How do you know if someone has stolen your web content?

Your website content is very precious, it doesn’t just tell visitors about your products and services, but it’s unique to you, which is great for being spotted by Google. But, what if someone stole your web content and what does it mean for your site?

Well, after feeling totally annoyed and angry that someone has stolen your copy, then honoured that your copy is so great someone wants to use it, at the end of the day its damn-well not on.

Google looks for duplicate content on the internet, if it finds large chunks of identical copy it will lower the Google ranking on both sites, or even get you banned. You can use free online checkers such as Plagium and Dupli Checker to see if someone else has copied your content and used it elsewhere.

When writing your website copy, think about your keywords, the message you want to get across and your target audience. Quite often we find people writing copy with keywords they want to be found for, but not taking into consideration what Googlers would search for.

The words on your website are extremely important:

  • Your copy forms part of the SEO for your site. The words and phrases you use help Google-searchers find you.
  • Google will look at the page titles and descriptions on each page of your site and match them against the content. If Google determines there is no relation between the two it will simply not rank you as high.

At the end of the day the internet is an open source for people to find information, just keep an eye out for people stealing your content with regular checks with an online checker.
